Pedagogical and artistic significance as well as controversies that sometimes follow competitions rank them in the most exciting musical events. The results are of course important, but the competitions are primarily a holiday of music and opportunities for making new friends, sharing experiences and presenting exceptional talents!
Competitions in art have been in existence since ancient times. Over centuries in "black and white arena" in “music duels” competed some of the greatest musicians: Handel and Scarlatti, Mozart and Clementi, Liszt and Thalberg... Since 20th century, successes in competition usually creates opportunities for starting a career. Sometimes incredibly successful career launches after failure in competition - the Ivo Pogorelić case in Warsaw.
